On a 40"+ TV I would say you definitely would notice the difference, also depends on the viewing distance as well, but since full HD are so cheaps these days I would try and find one with the price range your after

Get full HD (1080) imo, even if you have to wait and save up to ~$1000

LCD TV's under $1000, 40-42" full HD

Looks like there are some cheaper options for LCD.

This chart indicates that you'll need to be closer than 2m to your 42TV in order to benefit from anything over 720p

Fair point.

Personally I definitely notice the difference between a Blu ray (1080p) and DVD (567p or 480p) at ~2m on a 46", so I'd be surprised if most people didn't notice a difference between 720 and 1080 at around 2m on a 40".

Freeview HD is broadcast in 1080i for the main channels now so a HD ready (not Full HD) TV has to downscale+deinterlace instead of just deinterlacing, it probably depends on the quality of the downscaler in the TV.

HD Ready can display 720p/1080i so no issues with Freeview HD.
