I am either feeling generous or am throughly sick of the same question being asked all the time, so for your entertainment and amusement here are the steps for you to check for yourself if you have a tax refund due and how to claim it.

Feel free to copy/print/email this to people if you want -just acknowledge me as the author. Somebody sticky this if you think it important enough.

DISCLAIMER:
I am a CA but this in no way constitutes professional advice, it is a guide only, the information provided is highly generalised and may not be suitable for your circumstance, I take no responsibility for anything that happens as a result.

OK then lets get started:

1. Request a summary of earnings for the year/s you are wanting (you will need your IRD number for this):
https://www.ird.govt.nz/cgi-bin/for...form=soerequest

2. A summary of earnings will then be sent out to you in the mail.

3. When you receive your summary of earnings go here and select the "Personal tax summary calculation" for the year you are wanting:
http://www.ird.govt.nz/taxagents/ca...l-name/tools-p/

4. Select "I have a summary of earnings from Inland Revenue showing my income from these sources" and input the requested information (11B and 11E) from your summary of earnings.

5. Input details of any interest and dividends in the other boxes if you have any.

6. Click continue and it will tell you whether you have any tax to pay or refund.

7. If it says you have tax to pay... DON'T DO ANYTHING!! The online calculator doesn't retain any personal information and chances are IRD will never find out about it - congratulations you have managed to defraud IRD for however much tax you should have paid.

8. If it says you have a refund due go here:
https://www.ird.govt.nz/cgi-bin/for...form=ptsrequest

9. You will need to fill in all your details again and it will take them an age to process it but at the end of the day you will have your refund.

10. Done, go and spend your newly found fortune :D

If this helped you get back some money please consider making a small donation to one of these charities (or one of your choosing):

nah, hes right. I just wouldn't have gone to this much effort to put it all down.

Usually there are a couple of big reasons why you're due a refund here:
1. You're under 18 and wen't to school last year
2. You've worked holidays and not much during the year, so you were overtaxed during your holidays based on your total gross income. usually a reuslt of working a lot during your holidays so that your income is pretty sizable.

Thats bullshit... I worked part time last year and each week varied between 4 and 15 hours a week earning minimum wage but was taxed the full amount of a full time worker... Shouldnt I be eligible for something?

The thing I dont get is on my form it says

Rebate for income under 38,000: $168.84

But then a few figures later the bold message says Your tax to pay: $2.81

Contradiction?
