It's 1942. War rages across Europe, Russia and in the Pacific. The fate of the world hangs in the balance, with key battles about to be engaged which will dictate the future of mankind. Wanna get out there and help determine what happens? Now you can. Not just via some point-n-click interface, but right up there in the thick of it. Not just with a gun in your hand, but from inside a tank, a plane, a boat - hell, even sitting at an anti-aircraft gun or manning the artillery from a battleship. Finally, finally you can do all this and more. Finally there is a game that manages to let the player do almost anything they want - to play the game from any position and still influence the outcome. Welcome to Battlefield 1942....

I think it's too early to say BF1942 is the game of the year, especially with other great titles like UT2003 and NOLF2 just around the corner. There are several things that really killed the game for me, like the poor netcode and massive CPU and RAM resource requirements. :(

My Specs are:
P4 1.5Ghz
256mb RDRAM
Gf4 Ti4600

The game didn't ran well in botmatches, bots in BF1942 stinks. And once my RAM was overloaded the framerates plunged like a rock. On internet games the poor netcode didn't help, on jetstream (128k) it lagged quite a bit, and on 56k I couldn't even connect to a server! The map loaded and I got immediately bounced back to the main menu. Requirements for a server is huge, you need a lot of CPU Resources and a massive bandwidth to start with, (well I don't think any kiwi server have, say, a T1 line) otherwise there will be more lag.

One last note: If you're on 56k or you doesn't have a good enough machine you should NEVER buy this game! Go spend your $100 elsewhere!

No... Strange that, given it's not a standard used in NZ. Xtra has plenty of bandwidth._b

I think the review is quite biased.

It forgot to mention the smacktards other than in the brief cons section, among other things.

I would reserve chucking "game of the year" titles around until the end of the year, aswell o_O.

"Game of the year" is a big call, I don't think it's the wrong call and I'm sure if it's not on top it'll be a damn close 2nd.

O_o ;p O_o

Ay? What are you saying? T1 etc is the US standard, it's not used in NZ.

Indeed. Even if we get down to it and mention E1's, then why would I restrict the bandwidth I have for Xtra's servers to a measely E1 when they all have 100M switched connections to our backbone?

People who say the netcode is arse, do _not_ know what they are on about. The netcode in this game is frankly very very good. 56k'ers will have their best experiences on a 20 player or less server, but they can play on the 32 player ones and still have a playable environment. They'll be harder for the DSL/cable users out there to hit but they can still participate.

Game of the year? Big call, and totally justified.

-Been having a lot of fun with the SP game. Jetstream connected by end of next week so will be trying MP out then.
Using an XP1800 + GF4 4400 + 256 MB ram + SB Live. Have had no issues with framerate so far. Playing all levels with 25% CPU time to AI, maximum bots, maximum detail. Reading the review and comments above the Soundblaster Live is a contentious beast, and has caused heaps o probs for many. I've happily missed those problems somehow.

My biggest beef with the game is the bot AI - which can be both nasty & stupid. Example - playing Allied at Tobruk at 83% diff. (Only ticket death set hard. All others on Impossible) - First game, the axis never take a single control point. Second game, they take over 2 control points in the first 2 minutes of play. The third game, A balance between the first two games.

Bot pathing needs some work. I've seen groups of soldiers standing around, in unhelpful places doing stuff all.

Easily game of the year as far as I'm concerned!
There's nothing as addictive and as much fun as this game.
The smacktards suck, but they turn up in everyonline game, just play around them.

Be happy!

Spoon0r is right, 56k is FINE and best expirences are on the Xtra Retail HPW Servers, but the 32 player ones are just fine.
