Great article, I'm guessing you won't be able to play as the nz div? Actually which side will the allies be at cassino?. I'm pretty sure there were english, american, polish, french and indian divisions invovled in the attack as well.

I read in the paper today (one of those, "On this day in history" things) that there were Brazillian soliders at Cassino too.

I think it'll probably be British, maybe Free French (I would thing they'd want to use the new countries as much as possible)

Depending on what soliders are used (if they used British it would be best) someone could always skin them to have NZ uniforms.

(Don't look at me, i'm useless with those advanced graphic programs)

Thanks for your feedback guys, a complete review of the game will be done as soon as we get our hands on a copy. One of the hardened FPS Gameplanet boys is going to do it so it will get a thorough workout.

To our knowledge there will be no NZ units in the game, however from the screenies it looks as if the cassino battle will see the British on the Allied side.

There was also Greek, Italian and Japanese American Troops in Italy as well. The NZ Div was the only complete division in the Theatre of Operations from memory with the rest being a hodge podge of units from around the world, As the battles in Western Europe heated up units were stripped out for use on that front with their places being taken by ever more exotoc units. There is an argument that if they had strenghtined rather than weakened the front they could have broken through into Germany from the south.

Read the books, if you can get hold of a copy (the are now collectors items at around $200 each) from the library they are worth the read.

"Monte Cassino" by Sven Hassell is a book about a german penal tank regiment that fought on the mountain

There is a whole series based on the authors time in that tank regiment but this one gives a good graphical account of what war was like and the shit the soldiers had to go through to take the monastery

Recommended read if you can drag yourselves away from the PC long enough

I nearly threw up reading it (thats how graphical it gets)

Wicked stuff

Ahh ok, for the spotty little ones...
Penal means prisoner or disciplinary action so they were prisoners/criminals and they got used as cannon fodder ie the first to lead an attack and stuff

The Books of Sven Hassell although a good read and based around actual events are works of fiction.

The books to get hold of are the "Official History of New Zealand in World War 2" series. There are books covering the campaigns and also each of the individual units throughout the war.

They sound "dry" books however they are very compelling when you start reading the accounts of the battles and see the names of the casualties and their home towns here in NZ. NZ Soldiers were well respected in the War we all know this, but why? I'm reminded of one book regarding the battles in the desert where a kiwi soldier held up rommels tanks for a considerable amount time armed with a 2pdr AT Gun mounted on the back of a truck. Despite calls to surrender he refused and fought till he was killed. The germans stopped their advance while they buried him with honour. Or where the kiwis were short of spares for their trucks so much so that during a massive desert tank battle a lone kiwi truck drove out into the middle of the battle to a burning ammunition truck, jacked up the rear and removed the springs. NZ artillary regiment was I think the only one to employ German 88mm guns. We have some real heroes, and these stories should be remebered.

The books are full of these wonderful and quite unique anectodes of NZ troops.

The NZ second div actually numbered 25,000 men. (norm div is 12-15,000) When the the formidable german 90th light division surrendered in tunisia they asked to surrender there old enemys, in there words. "the equally formidable NZers"

But i will have to say NZ plays a big part in cassino in the negative sense. It was freybergs orders that turned the undefensible monastary into a fortress. (hindsight)

Surely they will release the 1.3 patch today or tomorrow.

The game is due to be on the shelves on Wednesday, so we would certainly be expecting to be patched before the game comes out?.

Would that not make sense to you guys?

This was written this morning............

Apparently RtR will include all the new netcode fixes and improvements of 1.3
The main reason for 1.3 (apart from the bug fixes) is so you'll be able to play on RtR servers (cept for the Italian maps)

(This is only what i've herd from EA...could easily have changed)
