my xnet ping spikes are getting worse and worse everyday, its virtually impossible to play any games online. i asked a xnet rep here on this forum for some help and all she could tell me was that my line was crap, well the fact is that my line was always crap and this only started to happened in the recent month. asked what i can do from here and there was no reply since. so i rang the helpdesk and the rep told me to do a WinMTR report, i did it and sent it back asap, they told me after a few days to do another one, so i did it again and sent it to them, havent got a reply back since.

like i said before i really liked xnet since i signed at the begining of the year, ever since june everything has been crap, download speed has been semi tolerable i guess, certainly not something to brag about. international traffic is just rubbish. hopefully this ping spike problem will go away when i switch ISPs.

im giving this 2 more weeks, if problem persists then im gone.

They have very similar prices to Xnet (usually around $5 more for the equivalant plan I think).

15GB at FS/128k is $50 with tolls, excess data charged at $2/GB in blocks of 5GB.

Xnet is cheaper.

IF you join Orcon don't expect to be able to do any p2p downloading during peak hours.

Telstraclear is a option. They don't use AsiaNetCom, allow interleaving off, don't shape p2p (i think) and it shouldn't be that much more expensive than Xnet.

Here are my ping's on various games-

International - Counter Strike 1.6 (Australian Server) - 35ms
Call of Duty 2 (American server) - 130ms
Grand Theft Auto (American server) - 190ms

Ive never played WoW so I wouldn't really have an idea of pings for that.

National - Counter strike 1.6 (Auckland Server) - 7ms-10ms
Call of Duty 2 (Auckland Server?) - 20ms

Downloads
-------------
National: 850KB/s, 7000kbps down, 800kbps up.
International - 700KB/s

But yeah, just a brief description of what I get with Telstraclear.

But you never know, maybe your modem crapped out or something.

Xnet is, and has been perfect for me since i joined. I used to get constant 5mbit but since a few days ago i've been hitting 8.3mbit while downloading even though my router reports my max being 8mbit - and that's from international servers.

+ 5 ping to nz servers = _b

Speaking of Go Large, does anyone know if the 4pm -> midnight restriction still applies on Go Large?

it applies all the time now I believe, not that you notice it (i.e. its always average or worse internationally). Im on GL still and its not half bad. Torrents are pretty stink on the public trackers but that's normal. Private trackers (NZ ones) do very well.

I am happy I stayed on Go large, I don't play online games so I can't comment about pings n whatnot.

As I've posted in previous threads, once your connection terminates back at Xnet, everyone is treated the same as any other customer. I'm not experiencing any speed problems at all and my latency is fine. If you are having issues, it's because of something between your computer and Xnet... quite possibly Telecom. Changing ISP's still keeps you on the same equipment in the exchange, so what you are hoping to achieve I don't know.

Used to be with Orcon, but changed last year to Telstraclear.

Orcon was good for speed, and ping on DOD source was around 20 - 50 NZ servers and around 40 - 60 av for Au servers.

That was fs/fs

Telstraclear in my opinion is slower but I have noticed that p2p is crap during the day and evening and better in the early morning. Gaming is alot worse than orcon, with pings for me being around the 90 to 110 mark, but still playable.

I think the biggest problem in NZ at present with dsl is the cost of bandwidth. Might head back to Orcon after contracted 12 months is over.

This is for me though, may be different for others.

exactly, so don't go with orcon. it was a waste of $100 and a lot of my time to find out that the only reason web browsing was fast was that p2p was throttled to 10-150KB/s 24/7. xnet is cheaper and i get 500KB/s (line speed) on international P2P as long as my exchange is up to it. just about any multiple source http download will also max out my line.

the only international gaming i do is on australian servers and that's 60-80ms.

look at what bender said. if you're having issues it's a problem with telecom's network, not with xnet. you are WASTING YOUR MONEY if you switch to orcon.
