Saw this running at Dick Smiths today.
It seems to be some programming language for the PS2.

Website
http://www.playstation-basic.com

Here is an Extract from the site:
Welcome to playstation-basic.com, the official website of the PlayStation 2 version of the programming tool Yabasic.

Yabasic for PlayStation 2 is a variant of the introductory programming language BASIC which features as a free bonus program on the PlayStation 2 in-box demo disc in Europe and Australasia.

Yabasic for PlayStation 2 allows users to write fun programs which can be saved on memory cards for storage and swapping. The online help system gives a complete guide to the features of the language, and the built-in sample code should get you up-to-speed with practical Yabasic programming. And to complement all this, there's this website. As a little extra, here you'll find some 'release notes' for the program, some solutions to common programming problems and news of future developments.

Good luck!

The interpreter at the heart of the programming application is open-source software, and includes contributions from enthusiasts around the world. Please see the links section for more information on the Yabasic project and obtaining the core source code.

Has anyone ever tried making any programs?
I haven't heard anyone talk about this in the forums, has anyone ever heard of it?
How powerful is the language?

I wouldn't really bother it, I mean imagine a psx netyaroze game with slighty better graphics, It's not like you're going to end up with a squaresoft quality game or anything.

Lol, I made a cool game.
It's a 2-player game where your object is to move a small 2d-face around the screen which represents the character, Your goal to capture a note which bounces around the screen randomly. First one to get $200 dollars wins the game. The notes value constantly changes meaning you make score a $20 or a measly buck. Also you can't leave the screen area, Your player bounces back into the screen.

Got to get some power-ups in then it should be all right. It's so fun playing a game you made your self, even if it sucks you get alot more enjoyment out of it.

Yes it's pretty cool. Reminds me when I had a TRS-80, and everyone then used to write heaps of stuff in Basic, as it was standard on computers back then, but never tried it on the PS2. That's one thing missing on computers these days, is a program simple enough like basic, which everyone can use. Sure you can get basic programs for PC, but not as a standard peace of software. It's a shame PC companies don't offer Basic, or some simiar lanuage to give people the chance to program their own software if thay want to. I think it's a great move on Sony's part to give us this so at least we can do our own programming if we choose to.

You can download Windows, Linux and Unix versions of YaBasic here, should non-PAL PS2 owners fancy giving it a go.

It's a great little tool ... nowhere near Yaroze standards though.

While it seems like a wonderfully nice thing for Sony to have provided with the system - you have to remember that they only did it so as to dodge a certain tax law in the UK (and/or EU). And they used freeware to do it. Hmmmph.
