Barking Dog first caught the attention of the Gameplanet team with their release of Homeworld : Cataclysm. Since then, their games have been frequently clever and innovative, while adding new twists to an already established game mechanic - if perhaps a little flawed in execution. 'Global Operations' continues this trend and shows that while Barking Dog was doing the polish and refinement work on CounterStrike for Beta 5 release, they were clearly studying the game and wanted to address some of it's shortcomings. The end result is a game that is an awful lot of fun but needs further polishing in its execution - something they seem to be doing with notes they are providing on what the next patch will do....

No, it is a lot more than a mirror image. Barking Dog haven't produced a clone, the whole feel of the game is much more frantic with the respawn sequence particularly meaning that waves of enemies tend to hit you. That alone makes the gameplay dynamic radically different to CS without considering the impact that medics and recons have on the game.

As for which is buggier well that is an interesting argument. Thanks to it's mod history CS gets away with a more flaky playing environment in my opinion than I expect from a commercial game. I realise CS is now a commercial product but it still has that history behind it. With Global Operations I expect a bit more because it is a professional game company making it.

This means bugs like the amusing 'missing head', the totally unacceptable but hard to repeat 'fall through floor' bug along with the still dodgy netcode even at the 1.2 patch simply don't cut it. There are also bugs when changing profession to adapt in a match which means that switching to a high cost profession like Heavy Gunner from, say, Recon can mean you are fighting with just a pistol for several spawns. Also I find it irritating that there is no reward to the Recon for doing his job of spotting enemy targets as the cash rewards are for either kills or hostage extractions/bomb placings. Same goes for Medics who don't seem to get rewarded for healing teammates.

It makes the public games a little frustrating as people don't want to do the vital Recon or Medic roles as want the money to get the big guns and have some fun.

These aren't huge bugs but more polish issues which Barking Dog do seem to be doing something about. I'd rate the game an extra half a point if it didn't have these problems.

The medic and recon classes do get $$ for their support. I forget the details; it tells you in the manual.

Yeah, and not a lot. Maybe I just suck and was getting shot too often for my healing efforts to make any difference.

Certainly my impression from playing it was that they didn't get any...

Great game though isn't it.
I find it a load of fun. The weapons are awesome. A lot of attention to detail there.
And the best part it is not full of lame wankers like you always seem to get in CS games.
So you don't tend to get slagged off every five minutes.
And very few TK'er too so far which is always good.
I play as Dirty Dog online so say hi if ya see me on.
:D

Yes it is, I enjoy it a lot. I hope that comes through in the review as it is a very good game. It just needs some final polishing.

I am still learning about many of the maps so if you see a Fred staring vacantly in the corner somewhere or looking decidedly lost, that is probably me... :)

But what good will assinine wit be in a FPS game? :)

Yep, hopefully I'll have some free time to mess around with it again soon. Just upgraded my system so am currently going through the tweak and geek stage with it as I learn all the options and what to set for best stable performance.

Gone from my P3-800 to an AMD XP 1800+ with DDR 333 MHz RAM.

It is a healthy kick in the pants speed wise and I am just getting to grips with optimisations. Currently I have everything at their most conservative settings till I get a feel for how the system behaves. Been very smooth thus far - I am quite impressed with the EpoX 8K3A motherboard and bios. Very stable and friendly bits of hardware thus far.

wolf: How did you find Global Operations frame-rate wise with that Celeron? I'd imagine it would be about the 20 fps mark. Certainly my P3-800 never really broke about 30 so I'd figure a Celeron with a slower FSB and smaller L2 cache would be thrashing a little.

Sheriff: I might seem like I know what I am doing but beleive I _am_ as incompetant as I look. :)

A 1 GHz processor will be fine for a while - certainly you can compensate for it with a good graphics card. I just find that my 800 is just struggling a bit too much with the games I want to play. Particularly that resource sapping beast called Tribes 2.

My celeron had frames of 38 consistant, that was using the intergrated video Intel 810 Chipset LMAO, sometimes it amazes me.... CS is crap on my celeron, but Global ops is sweet as, that is with all settings on full.

Maybe you need a better resource manager program, thats if you dont have one anyway, or even if you do....

I can play Tribes 2 sweet as losing only down to 68% resources free
