While Madden NFL 2002 was a decent game in its own right, there we enough minor issues and annoyances to keep it from reaching its real potential. The CPU running game was disappointing and defensive AI was often questionable. We were pleasantly surprised with the little that we managed to see of Madden NFL 2003 at E3 this year so our hopes for the final version were high. Happily, EA Sports has delivered the goods this year and Madden 2003 is an exceptional title with very few drawbacks....

Nice review, Matt. This years version sounds like it has a lot of new (but little) stuff. I'll be getting the PS2 version, which sounds pretty similar to the PC version. It seems like EA is feeling a lot of pressure from the NFL2K series, so they have gone a lot further this year to improve Madden (or at least that's my conspiracy theory;))
I'm looking forward to the Minicamps, and Football 101 (dunno if that's in the PC version). In the past I've been playing Madden, but not totally understanding the plays I've been calling. I think I've managed to fluke finding certain plays that work for my team, rather than as a part of a strategy or reaction to the denfensive line-up. With these new features, I think that'll could be solved. Possibly similar for a lot of NZ players, where we don't grow up with the game or have as much exposure to it.

Last year's PC version (2002) of Madden was a port of the previous year's PS2 version (2001). EA have done the right thing this year in developing all versions simultaneously.

Yep, I agree with that. People avoid football here because they don't understand it. I doubt it will actually encourage many people to buy the game however (more of a bonus for those that do buy it).

The feature's I liked best was the defensive coach cam, letting you see how each Defensive player was assigned (zone/area or man), and the mini camp drills- they are so addictive, and helpful for getting better.

Remember anyone from NZ can join the Club I started on EASO it's called "New Zealand NFL" unfortunately there is no easy way to find it other than go through all the public clubs.

Can't you create a custom one in Windows XP?

You can, but only up to 4 buttons, not 10.

I've emailed ea to see if there's a patch letting you play with gamepad and keyboard, as you can offline, just not in ranked online matchups.

Didnt think that there was anyone who played Madden games outside of the club football scene, but if you live in auckland you can join a little comp that is played every year between the local football clubs.
