It's not actually that clever, Axion. I doubt most of South Auckland has wireless routers, even if they did, most people are clueing on to restricting their access.

@Eclipse, with all due respect, if only you had a clue about the pscyhology of the average person that grows up in poverty with physical and mental abuse, and their attempts to find meaning in life. Then you will understand why they turn out that way.

Not only that, but the government would lose a lot of popularity (as if it could handle that) and perhaps get voted out in the next election.

Bullshit.. to an extent your right but at the end of the day if the person has got a brain and got morals, respect for others etc then they can change.. everyone has a choice.

What about the blacks in America they are ruthless no doubt but theres more often than not a fool with at least a clue and ' preaches' that shit to others in saying its not the way to go etc... never see that shit here.. everyone follows the leader.

Having a kid brought up in poverty with like you said mental and physcial abuse can be huge factor.. but at the end of the day if the kids wise enough then he would wake up to that bullshit.

I've had a pretty shit life growing up and I have had my fair share or mental and physical abuse too.. but that didn't change me pal it taught me in what not to be..

So by your logic, you have free choice, and yet you have happily demonstrated your racism. Did you choose to be racist or did mummy and daddy teach you to be that way?

Yes, "if" the person has those attributes... etc etc, but clearly we're talking about people who generally don't have those attributes because they haven't been brought up with these influences - quite the reverse. They have a brain yes but have they been taught how to use it?

Totally agree that everyone has a choice, it's just that the level of difficulty in disposing of such a negative lifestyle differs per person.

I agree they need to be careful in how they define what groups are covered by the legislation, but the intent is to cover associations that come together for the purposes of crime and violence.

And you're willing to leave the definition of groups that are "safe" up to the government, are you? I think you misunderstand where Benjie was coming from.

That would be why we elected them.

As long as they give us a clear definition of what groups are covered I don't have a problem with it. If it is out of line we can address it and get it changed if need be.

1. Just because "society" elected them doesn't mean you (or I) elected them.

2. What if the government of the day decreed that all other political parties are "illegal" groups, and membership in them was punishable by imprisonment?

A government, any government, should not have input into who I or anyone else may associate with.

If just a smidgen of common-sense is used I think it's pretty easy to figure out who is a threat to society and who isn't. While you could actually argue that political parties are a threat, they are part of the democratic process. Should KKK et al. groups be allowed?
