Watchmen - WARNING: Local DVD + Blu-ray MISSING THE DIRECTOR'S CUT (+ some extras)

I just came across this alarming news, the Watchmen DVDs and BDs planned of release in Australasia and the UK by Paramount are MISSING THE LONGER DIRECTOR'S CUT (also a few extras). Our releases only have the shorter Theatrical Cut.
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=70802

You're gonna have to import one of the North American releases by Warner if you're wanting the Director's Cut.
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=70650

Either that or you could wait for the Ultimate Edition.

Quote:
Just before the cinema release Snyder confirmed the Ultimnate edition for the end of the year (I would imagine in one of those big boxes with extra "stuff in" like I am Legend & 300 last year and blade runner the year before) it should be announced at the SDCC this summer. As noted above Ultimate edition will be the directors cut plus the tales of the black freighter integrated with linking live action footage. It probably won't be a blu ray exclusive.

On a side note, the PS3 disc version of the poorly reviewed brawler "The End is Nigh" includes a HD version of the Director's Cut.

Quote:
· Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience is an innovative, retail Blu-ray Hi-Def game and film hybrid which will include Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2 and the Watchmen: Director’s Cut on Blu-ray. This new cut of the action-packed blockbuster includes an additional 25 minutes of footage not seen in theaters, available only on Blu-ray and DVD. The two-disc collectible set will also feature exclusive artwork in a premium package. The game will be playable on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system which can also play the Blu-ray disc of Watchmen: Director’s Cut. The Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience will be available on July 21 for a suggested retail price of $49.99.

So that's another way to get the DC, buy a shitty licensed beat-em-up game for PS3.

Just got the 2 disc special edition bluray from Mighty Ape and can confirm that its not the director's cut.
Still happy with the purchase though, it's one of my favourite films of the year, and the transfer looks to be as striking as The Dark Knight.

So lame how the 2 disc DVD has a metal tin with the best cover(echoes the graphic novel) and the blu-ray is just a standard case and pretty standard cover..

The directors cut is awesome btw, so much better than the theatrical cut if you have read Watchmen. Doesn't feel like 3 hours :D

Oh, good find.
I'm probably just going to wait for whatever Ultimate edition comes here.

It's definitely not out here because the DVD/Bluray just got released.
I guess end of year/next year we might see another version.

It was supposed to come out here in August but the company that was to release it when under leaving all Paramount titles in limbo. Universal has taken over the releasing for Paramount and are working through the backlog.

I'm using optical out from the PS3 and get the same with every setting I can find. PS3 Info says the Bluray is outputting DTS-HD MA 5.1 but I think my amp is a bit too old to understand what to do with it (Yamaha HTR 5730)

There's an option to bitsream your audio in the Audio settings, saying yes to this will tell the Ps3 to stream whatever the audio stream is encoded with intact to your receiver. Because you're using optical which has a max bandwith of 1.5mbs when its trying to bitstream DTS_MA it just converts it down to regular DTS (5.1 and 1.0mbs) and bitstreams it. If you set it to not bitsream it converts it to PCM on the PS3 then outputs it, this either outputs as 5.1ch 1.5mbs or 2.0ch 640kbs. Sorry I should have told you to bitsream it lol, my bad. Forgot PCM can sometimes go to 2 channel >_<

Tried that too - still no joy. I can get the French audio in 5.1 but my French isn't that great...

What are people thoughts on Directors Cut (special edition) vs Directors Cut with Tales of the Black Freighter tied into it (ultimate collection)?
I'm trying to decide which one to get from Amazon on Blu-Ray. I don't know if it will detract away from the movie having another story throughout it.

I cant wait to get the Ultimate Cut, mostly for the deleted scenes rather than the Black Freighter interlacing.

If you've read the graphic novel, not having the Tales of the black freighter story in takes away from the movie. You'll have to watch it to see why as I hate spoiling stuff :D
