Review by Ian Knott;

Quote:
Having never played the previous two instalments in Sidhe Interactive’s Rugby League series I’m not in a position to comment on how Rugby League 3 improves on its predecessors. So with that in mind I’m reviewing the game as if it’s the first in the series – based on its own merits.

It should also be noted that I am a football player – of the round ball persuasion, but I do love league and know the game pretty well. That said, I’m reviewing the game as a gamer, not as a league fan. For the technical side of the game I sat down and had a marathon session with someone who knows the game very well indeed – Simon Mo’unga, the standoff and goal kicker for the Bartercard Cup winning Canterbury Bulls.

Graphics are awesome for what the Wii is.

Show me a Wii title that succeeds at realism, its good at cartoons _b low res textures etc.

Also some comments towards Sidhe in that article should be directed at HES, the publisher.

Overall pretty good review though, good on ya for getting a league guy in to play it with you.

On a side note, some of the less favourable reviews on metacritic use NFL and NHL titles for comparison, which is a joke... RL is a tiny market.

I have to agree that the graphics are disappointing and the motion controls simply do not work. Bummer for those who do not have a Gamecube controller lying around from the previous generation.

It's a shame that the same problems that have plagued the previous 2 installments are still here. Firstly the amount of forward passes gets ridiculous in a game. Then when the difficulty is increased to Legend, it seems that the CPU AI is unstoppable. Like the reviewer has stated, quite often defending players do nothing but stand there and watch while the opposition scores a try. Then your team gets too tired and drops off tackles, they don't number up on defence and their speed is reduced. It's not the best way to increase the difficulty (although the EA Rugby games also had a few issues with their difficulty settings too).

Basically a player is left to play on the mildly challenging Seasoned difficulty and have a somewhat breezey franchise, or the over-the-top Legend difficulty, get frustrated with the sheer amount of mistakes their team makes and the high number of line breaks the CPU does.

Also I do think that the game should've had up to date rosters for 2010.

Without a Gamecube controller it's definitely at 6/10 - with a Gamecube controller it's 7/10
