Splinter Cell: Conviction reviewed

Review by Aylon Herbet;

I've often said that last year was the year of the sequels. This year is fast shaping up to be the year of similarities.

By this I mean Darksiders is similar to Zelda, Dante's Inferno is similar to God of War and PlayStation Move is a lot like the Wii. Splinter Cell: Conviction, it turns out, is a lot of Batman: Arkham Asylum, and let me be clear when I say that this is not a bad thing. The similarity comes into play with the speed. You no longer hide in the same dark corner for three to five minutes studying a patrol pattern. No, this time you move quickly through the shadows, study the scenario, come up with a plan and then execute it. It's fast, sleek, and very satisfying when it all goes well. As a fun bonus, even when it doesn't go well, cleaning up your mess can be equally satisfying.

How long did the co-op campaign take?

There are 4 missions in the co-op, I don't know the exact time but I'd say it is about the same length or slightly shorter than the single-player. But of the two, it is definitely the one with the most replay value.

Only 4 missions and it took almost the same time as the whole singleplayer campaign? Whaaat.

Anyway, anyone keen for CO-OP when I get this on PC?

Yeah, the co-op missions are considerably longer, individually, than the single-player ones.

I'll wait until the price comes down. I cant justify price at the moment for what you get.

Yeah, all game reviews almost always have an embargo. This review was published to coincide with the lift of the general embargo on reviews of SC: Conviction for NZ press. Exclusive embargoes involve certain arrangements and quid pro quos with publishers. By policy, GP will not enter into arrangements with publishers for reviews ;)

As far as we can see, we're the only NZ gaming site that has such a policy.

want a review? if you've played the demo, you've played the whole game. there's not much more splinter cell conviction has to offer other than running into enemies pressing b, followed by mark and execute. ohhhh it's a sad day today, the sam fisher of old is dead, splinter cell conviction aka UBISOFT'S POS REMAKE OF ASSASSIN'S CREED WITH USE OF ARKHAM ASYLUM TYPE GAMEPLAY has instead replaced it. ****ing shithouse. **** ubisoft, and **** sam fisher. i might just go play some double agent, A GAME THAT I THOUGHT WAS A BAD SPLINTER CELL GAME, this new conviction pos takes the ****ing cake on shithouse splinter cell games.

****sakes ubisoft why couldn't you just take a leaf out of chaos theory's book, or pandora tomorrow's for that matter. SPLINTER CELL AND SAM FISHER ARE NOW DEAD, AND YOU KILLED THEM UBISOFT, YOU MOTHER****ING COCKSUCKERS :ffs:

raaaage. needless to say, so far, i dont like the game.

Try playing without abusing the mark and execute. Mostly use it tactically to keep tabs on where enemies are. It makes the game feel more traditional SC. Also try the co-op, you may enjoy that more.

Sorry to hear you are not enjoying it Kenni :(

^ 17 bro. but the mental maturity of a 7 year old ;p

i think i may have overreacted a little, see i had the difficulty on realistic and thought it would be all good, turns out i started dieing a lot :p which also made me rage hard. so i turned it down to normal and things went a lot smoother.

so disregard most of what i said before. however, the game does play more like an arkham asylum remake and it bares little to no resemblance in gameplay of previous splinter cell games. it's fast and deadly gameplay, which makes for a lot of fun while playing, there's a lot of improvisation that goes into taking down your enemies as well, which is awesome.

basically it's just an awesome game. however, if you're looking for something similar to the old splinter cell games, nah, no way, conviction is farrr off from being anything like the older games. it's sort of disappointing but at the same time conviction kicks ass so it's all good :D

Spoiler: (highlight this text to read it)
best mission by far is infiltrating third echelon headquarters. his entrance when he walks up to the receptionist is so awesome "Fisher. I used to work here..." then bam! hahaha. also the iraq mission was pretty cool too, a bit out of the ordinary but interesting. short campaign though, been playing for about 7 hours and nearly done.

ah true i started using your tip on marking them to watch their movements, it helps a lot lol, thanks. also sick review bro, pretty much spot on _b especially with the outdoor level, i got the feeling that felt a lot like the hitman series too.
