I'm unable to connect to any sites hosted with Yola it seems. Nothing using x.yolasite.com loads. Example: http://jfotography.yolasite.com

Oh well. Hopefully just a peering problem that'll get sorted out soon.

Your traceroute to 107.20.225.164 looks fine, I would say the issue likely lies in Telecom's Global-Gateway Internet Service there may be an issue with their implementation of the DIA filter it should not be affecting other ISPs traffic. You should contact Orcon to let them know so they can work to get the problem resolved.

If the traceroute output continues with 'Request timed out' then there may a connectivity issue to the remote network at 107.20.225.163. What do you get if you traceroute to 107.20.225.164 for example?

You haven't actually given us the URL of a site to try visit but browsing to http://107.20.225.163 returns "Your domain is pointing to Yola! Now you just need to publish your site and you're done!" so I can connect to a placeholder page on the web server at least.

One thing in particular with that destination address is that (for me on Telecom at least) it routes through the DIA filter so some traffic could be blocked from access but that shouldn't affect Orcon as I don't believe they participate in the filtering scheme. I also seem to remember that Orcon sometimes have intermittent connectivity issues with direct peers on their Odyssey international network so that could explain connectivity issues also.

don't think level3 nor amazon have ever been a direct peer with odyssey.

it's level3/amazon/amazon-ec2 for that host.

i've never been impressed with amazon performance in nz, none of their sites seem to be postioned well for fast net access from new zealand.

it seems orcon are peering at equinix los angeles now.

they had some peers before, but it seems they have more now.

it also seems they brought tinet back up, and they route that aformentioned website on amazon cloud through it.

(wikipedia may go through it too, last time it was on for a short while and wikipedia seemed to go real slow)

it does seem that way. reverse traceroute is showing both 121.98.12.0 and 121.98.12.1 in the path.. packet loss seems to start at 121.98.12.1.

dunno what they're doing. scratch that, packet loss is showing within cogent's network. which a lot of odyssey stuff is traversing.

i accidentally tried one of the download speed tests from US server to a diff US server.. got 3mb/sec, from NZ 80k/sec.

testing sending at 4mbit/sec with udp shows 1.5% packet loss. 0.5% max is considered acceptable generally. (but less is way faster)

Dunno bought the US but for any 64+ player server I get rubber-banding which i doubt is orcon's fault though.

Anyone else getting pretty bad speeds in the evenings?

Downloads averaging 100 - 200 KB/s from about 8pm onwards. Fine during the day though.

Weird genius issue:

Friend has Genius, gets sync, gets past the temp IP address, his router pulls the config down sweet. Can't get past his router. Can't even ping the gateway address that the router configured for itself (a 60.x.x.x address).. BUT, he can get to any page on https (port 443 maybe?).

So yeah, it's like it's filtered everything except HTTPS... Orcon helpdesk are no help whatsoever. I can't find anywhere in the bullshit Genius router's config that deals with ports.. I tried to manually forward port 80 as a test, no dice..

Anyone know the default username/password for telnetting into these mothers?

Some how orcon thinks I downloaded 25gb normal downloads and only 17gb uncharged in one day. That day I only downloaded steam content connecting to the ORCON server on steam!! Clearly they have screwed up somewhere.. The guy on the phone said they have had instances in the past where they would double charge by accident.

You're sure it was only the Orcon content server? Steam uses multiple servers at once.

Yeah had similar last year. Ended up sending them screen grabs from Steam to prove it was only connected to Orcon server and they eventually waived the excess charges.

This year has started well, their data useage tool has been broken since Dec 24 _b both via web browser and widget.

Yeah the tool is broken but when its fixed (which it now is) all the data you didn't think was counting catches up with you. I just jumped from 30gb yesterday to 90gb today. (No I didn't download 60gb in 1 day).

Yup. My son yesterday went "woo-hoo, free internet" >_< till I explained that it will eventually show used data. But as of today 9 Jan, it's still broken, from Dec 24th.

All data is expensive in NZ.

If I had a plan like my brother with 300GB, Phone, Land Rental + Free Calling to Two Set Numbers for 75$ I'd be over the moon but it'll never happen in NZ.

I doubt they'll introduce new plans until they can start rolling out fibre plans, only then will standard plan prices drop and data prices might actually become realistic in NZ.

Mine fixed itself today, at 129GB for the month, 1GB off my Limit.

Thankfully I move at the end of the week so it'll be reset after the new connection at my new place.

I did get away with a nice chunk around xmas though, I just considering it a xmas gift for all the bs I put up with through the year with orcon dodgy service.

Yeah I find Orcon to have the only relatively big data cap I could find, haven't looked in a few years though. Would give my left nut for a 1TB plan like all my friends in Aus.

Orcon always was the only provider that gave me the gigs I wanted so I am currently on 120gigs with home phone.

vodafone guy knocked and I wasnt going to talk to him because no one offered the gigs. To my surprise instead of paying orcon $180 for home/broadband with 120gigs it was going to cost $120 for the same with some of my sky bill paid as well.

Hence I am here to see if VF speeds are crap or not.

I went from Orcon to VF. VF are lightyears better in terms of service, I'm on a telecom wholesale connection so speeds are the same.

Only issue with VF is the contract

I didn't think of the contract. I will have to look and see the term. The thing that worries me the most is that I currently can saturate my 12Mbit link all the time and I dont know about vodafone.. I am in the redzone but I dont know a lot about them.
