For everyone's reference, Ph33r has no idea how to beat the slingshot prioritisation apart from proxying traffic through nationally hosted boxes. He's also not yet a connected slingshot customer. :P

Hmm, seems to be working, have not done any speed test for difference though(loads quite fast)

I'm unsure if it makes much of a difference. Some videos won't load at all (esp. 720p ones) as they don't seem to be on the cache, and those that are only buffer slightly faster than the rate that they play at (struggle to get 100kBps from it)

Hmm what if you change the IPs to 119.224.143.70 (one of their Oversi IP's for media caching), does it just stop working together or does it work.

Either their DPI is nuking it or Orcon's Google Cache's aren't up to it in terms of origin connectivity back to Google, unlike Telecom's

With the Orcon one, when I tried switching to 720p on the four videos I tried they just didn't seem to buffer at all. Tried the refresh trick and changing back to 720p, nothing. Came back in about 30s, still nothing.

The oversi IP doesn't do anything.

Oh OK, yeah adding these hosts file entries would be the equivalent to refreshing anyway.

Too bad you can't leech off Telecom's Google servers anymore (requests are blocked + routed internationally for those external of Telecom Broadband) Google should deploy their own public ones at the APE like they do in Sydney... if only NZ had enough traffic.

If I do that refresh thing, I'll sometimes get the video from the oversi cache the second time, however that only seems to work for the default quality (lowest) for which I can usually get the Orcon cache or the int'l ones are fast enough anyway.

I have no idea, it could simply be that youtube has recorded that the average speed for SS customers is too poor to support higher

If with those hosts file entries, you still get times when it loads from an Oversi IP 119.224.143.x then it's the Oversi box that responds to the request and ignores any quality requests.

Basically how I think it works is that when you request a YouTube video (i.e. http://v1.lscache1.c.youtube.com/videoplayback ) it intercepts the HTTP and adds an HTTP Redirect to http://119.224.143.x/... which serves the video in a non-transparent manner.

So for those on the plan.....

Definitely does something like that, and it does appear that it won't cache 720p (or does awfully slowly)

20kBps for regular HTTP downloads pretty much 24/7 from the three servers I use regularly, maybe 30kBps from some others most of the day.

Pings seem low, but I get the occasional lag spike when playing on Aussie servers (not sure about US ones since I haven't tried any)

not bad but not good either oversea ftp for me is constant 70K which will drop overtime (pretty sure)

Probably not unless you simply do a lot of browsing or use lots of national traffic.

whats youtube like? we have like 3 laptops and 2 gaming pc and we chew through data. we do a lot of gaming too

Pretty much unwatchable on anything but the lowest setting.
Even then, if a video is not on the cache, it is likely to need to pause to buffer a couple of times.

So, like I said before, if most of your traffic is browsing (that's browsing, not HTTP downloading) and gaming on NZ (and possibly Aussie for FPS) servers, it'll be good. Otherwise, I'd be wary unless you don't mind 20-30kBps speeds.
