Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in small scale online gaming in nz? Mainly for bf3, call of duty, and a few other games.

There would be weekly seasonal leagues, weekly casual games, and tournaments. Prizes and bragging rights up for grabs. Would be akin to mlg, but relative to nz's size.

But yeah just wanting to see what interest there would be. Please leave opinions on this.

Cheers.

Problem is there isn't much competition in NZ. This type of thing has being done before with other CoD games just in NZ. It boiled down to 1 or 2 teams who absolutely dominated everyone else.

BF3 may be more interesting.

Yeah I'd be into it, I think if we wanted something on a larger scale (as in more teams, rather than bigger games) and more reoccurring, CoD would be the way to go, but I'm easy... BF3 would be good times also.

Yeah pity nz is quite small, but nothing stopping it being catered to casual competitors and hard core competitors. Different leagues for all.

Good example for bf3 would be squad dm. 4 man squads = a lot more teams = a lot more competiton.

Sorry posting off cell phone so will post more in depth posts when im on pc. In b4 everyone wants to be i. Necrises squad lol

Just do it, the problem in New Zealand isn't the lack of interest, it's the lack of people committed to putting in the hours and dedication to keep the wheels turning.

Can't blame them when there are little rewards on the time they invest.

I think it would be great if it could work, but I also think its much easier to just compete in Australian tournaments/competitions.

Would be easier to cop out and play in aussie comps, but who want's to be playing with them :p

I'll tinker with the idea over the week, would be keen to get some form of competitive gaming going on for NZ.

No doubt there would be heaps of casual gamers who would be keen to play for competition and win great prizes and titles.

I agree. _b

Would be interested. I'm looking at getting into competitive LoL and regular livestreaming and youtubing anyway; as a hobby.

Look at how full the ON3 servers are. If word got out you could easily get quite a few teams interested. Games wise, BF3 and Dota 2 would be great choices, esp Dota 2.

There's always been scenes for competitive gaming. COD and CS have had their fair share of teams, same with BF2. Thing is that with the odd exception, the scene never really lasts to long. I for one would be keen to give BF3 a shot

With these past competitons did people usually pat a registration fee? I'm not syre how inclined entrants would be to pay an up front fee to enter? But then the money for server hire and prizes need to come from somewhere O_o

People won't pay. People are cheap. You will either have to fund it yourself, get sponsors, or rely on teams to use their own servers. The website will be the backbone of anything you do, so it needs to be solid, easy to use, and automated.

As for the server hire, you can coax server providers into hosting your games, as you'll be providing more exposure and players onto their servers

Prizes have always come from sponsorship, or out of someones personal pocket. The entry fee is pretty popular over in comps in America, but they have such a massive players base that it actually works.

Hmm... I don't know. I think people will pay but you just have to get the pricing right. Or at least show it in a way where people see benefit (and you benefit as well). Its definitely a fine line but I think its possible.

If they really are that cheap, they're not that competitive anyways and are no loss to the competitive gaming scene.

I guess it's not so much that people are cheap, but if your providing a service (competitive online gaming ladders) that requires lots of people, you will probably drastically reduce the people who use it if you charge. Because only those who have played competitively before, or who really want to get committed, will sign up. Also younger players might not be able to afford it, or have any means of paying for it.

Unless of course we're talking about competitions which are fun through a forum/community, in which case you could probably get enough community donations for servers and a small prize.

Need alot of cohesiveness for good competitive gaming. Found in some places that egos inevitably got in the way of a good time. Find casual gaming more fun.

Sweet cheers for the opinion guys. Just tinkering with the idea at the moment and coming up with some ideas

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For example :

One off BF3 Squad DM tournament - Total of 3 rounds. Easily be done a Friday night.

16 Teams
4 Player Squads
64 Entrants

$10 or $20 Entrance Fee

You get points for winning a round, points are important to get to the finals.

Points for winning a round:

1st place = 4 points for squad + 5 spot prize draws per individual
2nd place = 3 points for squad + 4 spot prize draws per individual
3rd place = 2 points for squad + 3 spot prize draws per individual
4th place = 1 points for squad + 2 spot prize draws per individual

Round 1:

Pool A:
Team 1 v 2 v 3 v 4

Pool B:
Team 5 v 6 v 7 v 8

Pool C:
Team 9 v 10 v 11 v 12

Pool D:
Team 13 v 14 v 15 v 16

Round 2

Pool E:
Top 2 of Pool A & Top 2 of Pool B

Pool F:
Top 2 of Pool C & Top 2 of Pool D

Finals

Points do not matter in the finals. It's a matter of who wins this round.

Pool G:
Top 2 of Pool E & Top 2 of Pool F

1st Place = 1 million dollars
2nd Place = 500grand
3rd Place = 100 grand
4th Place = Free entry to next event.

(monopoly money of course :p)

Spot prize drawn at end of event for individual = Something awesome

End of Example. (Just thought up in 10 minutes, would need refinement of course)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway I believe there is heaps of room for ladders, leagues, tournaments, and casual competition. The amount of NZ players for BF3 alone is huge. Guess If I'm going to do it, I will better get started now as BF3 is still nice and fresh. And it seems as if the interest is there, just need to captivate people into it.

Heh I remeber the BF1942 MGL in '03, didn't have comms so basically running around like a headless chook. Those were the days.

oh and then you have CS, COD, LoL/Dota 2 etc as well :)

Sweet cheers Dark-Force, will start posting on other forums once I have thought it through and done my research, and have some sort of website up and running.

Have a MLG style point ladder to create placings would be a big start in creating a competitive NZ league
