In light of the board gaming topic that popped up here recently I thought I'd bring up card gaming.

I moved to small town New Zealand (Nelson) where my geeky board games (Catan, Power Grid, Puerto Rico, Race for the Galaxy) were frowned upon by the locals However card games seem to be much more acceptable and travel really well ... an all round

I've been playing alot of 500 (with 4 people) recently and love it but I feel it's time to mix it up. Any suggestions for good card games with as much depth and strategy as 500?

Any one else here play cards often (no I'm not talking about Magic cards or Yu-Gi-Oh ) ?

Up and Down the river is a great one, easy to learn, playable with anything from 3 to 7 players, lots of strategy involved. Would recommend.
Hearts is the other obvious one.

My sources say bridge is pretty legit.

A game of thrones the card game or just any card game by Fantasy Flight games.

500 is best.... zero of my friends (bar one) ever want to play it.

500 is GREAT, used to play with my grandparents, and my parents growing up. Three generations playing!

I've spent the last 2 days at work learning Pinochle, seems quite cool, maybe a little more complex than 500. Look forward to trying it out sometime soon!

Only card games i know are go fish and last card.

Canasta is another good one, needs two decks though. Also here's one I've played which was pretty fun http://www.pagat.com/beating/shithead.html It's one of those games that has a million variations though; we had 5s reversing direction and 8s making next player play a lower card, and I think we had four piles instead of three

Mostly play Netrunner, and a bit of Call of Cthulu at the moment.
