This I am excited about. The original planetside was a nice mix of FPS and MMO, with live battles happening on multiple fronts at all times. Though it suffered in gameplay if you weren't in a squad with a clear command structure which was frustrating for new players. For this reason it lost the "casual" market when WoW popped it's head up, and died a lingering death. Until SOE sent out this:

    http://www.planetside-universe.com/n...works-2335.htm

Survey can be found here: http://www.questionpro.com/akira/TakeSurvey?id=1368989

I encourage people to take this survey as they will also be using the survey to gauge public interest in the title. I imagine if there is little response to the survey they'll can the idea, and I really want epic battles again.

So please take the survey, for me.

I completed the survey when it was first emailed to me in September. As an early tester and long time player I am super keen to see another entry into the Planetside universe, the mechanics in the original were wonky for too long sadly, by the time they had things closer to where they should have been it was too late. Lots of good times were had

I must admit, planetside sparked my interest bigtime when it was around. Then I realised it'd be a laggy piece of **** playing it here from NZ, and didn't get into it.

Yeah. Mind you at the time NZ internet was pretty poo. I imagine with current broadband service and services like pingbetter we'll be able to play more competitively.

It was pretty bad though. I used to just fly aorund in a scout, or do troop drop missions rather than **** aorund trying to go toe to toe with other infantry.

Although latency was definitely an issue I never felt that it prevented me getting stuck in and having decent results. I typically played as NC infantry and I specialised in taking down heavies with the guided AT rockets. Had pretty damn good success overall although heavies were typically slow or stationary which worked in my favour. Getting into pitched fights with opposing light or medium infantry was somewhat less successful.

Since technology has moved on since the original launch, I imagine we could see a much more ambitious and varied game. At least I hope so.

Yep. The only troubling thing was they wanted to change the theme somewhat. There were suggestions for a low tech version of planetside. Blech. Planetside is all about the tech.

Dammit I want to take the survey again but it won't let me. I had an idea that if the increased the number of planets (which wouldn't depart too much from storyline) they could open the door for space combat too. That would be so ****ing dope, it'd be like mechwarrior, x wing vs tie fighter and battlefield all rolled into one.

Maybe i'm too optimistic as to how my feedback will shape the game

Ah space combat, nice I never thought of that.

I only played the original for about 3 months, but yeah I remember it being pretty awesome for the time. I think played mostly in some aircraft called the reaver or something like that.

Space combat would have been pretty awesome - especially if done in a similar way to SWG's Jump to Lightspeed.

This piece from RPS pretty much sums up Planetside in one go - 'I was there man'

Yeah Planetside still contains some of the most epic gaming battles I've ever taken part in.

6 Hour fights over a bridge. Awesome
3 way fights over a base in amerish for 2 days (we slept in the middle then came back .. still raging).

Its epic running a full bomber formation with your mates etc :P

Best MMO type game for a long time

^^ **** yeah! In game i'd always grabe the anti vehicle or bomber aircraft, THere was nothing better than a well co-ordinated air-land battle.

    ENemy: THey're not advancing!

    zzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZOOOOOOMMMMMMMMmmmm -BOOM BOOM BOOM-

    Enemy "Oh thats why"

Battles where all teams had the same level of co-ordination just got crazy, technically they were stalemates.... but very very violent stalemates.

Oh god I love this game. Was way ahead of it's time imo.

Always wanted to play this but think I had a full social calendar when it was released.

Good thing they're making a sequel!

Yeah the 40 man platoons were ****ing epic, then acutally doing strategic plans based on the commander was actually rewarding.

I missed it so much about a month ago I started back up my account and started again (Since the merge of the servers my **** got deleted ... but I was only lke br 12 anyway).

The level of detail in the overall planning/deployment was epic, having ful platoons of fighter squads or footsoldiers (my pref) was epic.

My flatmate and I used to get a vanguard and live in it for the next 8 hours :P I'd be gunner (I'm pro at ranging with glorious 120mm cannon) and he would drive/engineer.

I've even to my record shot down 2 bombers and 1 mosquito in the tank, while moving hahahaha so epic.

Ever since this game all others seem small ... even wow doesn't compare to a 300-400 per side fight x 3 over a base ... the amount of cross fire etc was epic.

definitely would have loved to get into it.. but got hooked on another MMO, and simply didn't have the time to spread between multiples.

Planetside is not an MMO in the way we trend to think of them. Yeah you can spend 8 hours a day on it if you want to, but it's just as rewarding if you just want to jump in for a quick spree. WoW stole a good portion of my life because it REQUIRES a huge time investment to experience the majority of content, planetside stole **** all because it is a far easier game to walk away from.

Maybe that is one of the reasons it dies off thanks to WoW, all the casuals were too busy endlessly farming herbs or wiping in Scholo.

Oh man that was the ****. All manner of battles over choke points that resulted in hours and hours of non-stop conflict.

I recall one fight where NC started in the SW corner of Searhus and once we took the first base we simply kept moving until we hit the NE corner some 7 or 8 hours later. It was one hell of a fight the entire way, one of the few times we had large scale battles across open terrain instead of being focussed around a tower/base/bridge. Truly epic.

I lost track of the number of times we'd log off only to come back the next morning and find ourselves thrown back into the same fight we left the night before.

Not even a public beta test?
Methinks it might be fail, but would be happy to be wrong.
But if it was win you think we would have heard something by now.

I loved Planetside, was epic with the vehicular combat and infantry battles on a grand scale.

But I think I've got my nostalgia goggles on, and am probably forgetting a lot of the glaring negatives it had.
