I can already imagine the wife aggro this thing would generate.

been waiting for this to be done decently since the 90's, and this is only a baby step really but a very important one. The resolution still seems a little low, need high resolution and high refresh rate... then it will be a winner

flight sims in 6dof with VR, that will be awesome

also watch for the popped collar at 1:55

Ah I remember this from that early john carmack e3 vid. Seems great to me.
Hopefully some racing devs also jump on board as that genre suffers much less from the low rez display than your usual fps/military games.

+ also a step that will hopefully spur other companys into making a greater effort to bring something out thats better.

Quite impressive for a first off, a higher res oled display would be icing on the cake.

It's got some big names in the industry behind this so looks like it will be a success. Be interesting to learn how much the skus are for the public though after the dev kits have sold.

    refresh rate ?

Does 3D on a single display, so should be 120hz?

    Currently 1 screen at 60fps

The problem is that many of the screen manufacturers don't produce higher refresh rate small models for phones and such, john carmack talks about it in his E3 Talks

I'd love to see oled 1080p2k

So according to Carmack its worth waiting for OLED on these HMDs.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...-reality-uncut

OLED really is the technology that's ideal for a head-mount, because it's almost as fast as a CRT. It'll switch in under a microsecond, where even the best LCDs are four milliseconds or something, and variable. So OLEDs are great.
One direction that I was pursuing was extremely high update rates. I have gear to make a 120 frames per second OLED display, with zero latency, no processing. And I'm trying to convince Sony to rip the firmware on this to potentially get some of that going, because that makes a big difference.
But in a head mount, everybody can tell the difference between 60 and 120. That's one of the reasons I've been pushing for it.

Ever notice that the Up/Down resolution is higher than the left/right resolution?

Probably something to do with the peripheral vision for each eye.

OLED sounds good, I'd buy it if I was convinced it won't be a shitty 60hz.

^exactly the reason why this is targeted at developers, hackers and enthusiasts alike, this isn't going to work on your modern warfare casual gamer marketed games any time soon

    backed

musing for this beast, gonna work through some stuff.

We need new controller technologies designed specifically for VR, latency is a huge issue too.

I'm not just thinking about the game sides of things... designing the software to go with this is going to be am epic journey. I'd love to see some new takes on browsing the web but in both senses of practicality and the more eccentric side of things.

It's gonna be a slow process for these things to be adopted, offshoot of hacker communities putting together projects to expand on the databank is gonna be awesome to be apart of.

Im fine with it being 60hz, ive gamed with a monitor that has 60hz with v sync on the last five years, can't hurt

Better than most console games 30hz at least

Have not heard much about expected pricepoint. Probably $1000.

Wondering how this will perform for assisting people with blind disabilities, in watching movies etc...

Also there is no reason why this won't work on most games, what will be needed is that users adjust the FOV to compensate for the change in perspective (from a box to a wrap around view screen, so to speak)

How early did he back? The "devices shipped per week" they're predicting isn't great and they've been overly optimistic in all their delivery dates so far.
