Yeah pretty much. If Vega turns out to be around where everyone seems to think - between 1080 and 1080ti - it still won't be enough. Nvidia will just drop Volta a couple of months after that and it will be much faster than even the 1080ti. They'll price drop the pascal cards and whatever interest there was in Vega will dry up.

I'd really like to see AMD become competitive again, as they have in the CPU space, but it just doesn't seem very likely.

So in another five refreshes, AMD will have a 1070/1080

Refresh is being very generous, its just polaris 10 AIB with an extra 6 pin attached allowing an extra 80mhz max overclock while completely destroying performance per watt in the process, like a laughable 80+ watts for 5% more performance.

This is right up there with the worse rebrands AMD have done and its not even much cheaper to boot. 480/580 are only really decent when undervolted at stock clocks, not overclocked.

Nvidia for the first time I can remember, don't even need to do anything this year, 1060 is still a good card comparatively and will continue outselling 480/580 at a 5 to 1 ratio. Though if Nvidia were to go crazy and do another 1070 to 2060 like performance jump AMD would be out of the equation completely.

Now Ryzen is pretty decent but the graphics card line is just dead at this point at least until that vaporware Vega finally arrives...
Tomshardware has a review of the 580 Sapphire Nitro + LE and compares it to the 480 Nitro +.

Both draw similar amount of power since both factory overclocked (though there is no reference 580 so who knows what base the factory overclock is from) - but the 580 is clocked 100mhz higher than the 480 thanks to the more refined 14nm process, there are also power savings for multi monitor setups and video accelerated tasks. The release has also allowed Sapphire to vastly improve there cooling solution, the 580 Nitro + is a bit bigger with a far better heatsink, running much cooler and quieter.

Performance wise, some games they tested had double digit % improvements while a couple had none but yeah overall small improvement. If you haven't upgraded from R9 380x and down, then the 580 or 1060 are decent cards, even the 570/1060 3gb would be a decent upgrade.

You can flash your RX 480 to an RX 580 in some cases. They are pretty much the same card. Reminds me of a certain CPU manufacturer.

Recently updated my mobo firmware and installed the Ryzen utility to see speeds and possibly look at overclocking in future.
    AMD Ryzen 1700
    Asus B350M-A

I noticed that after I updated the firmware the temperatures changed quite a bit (for the better) but also noticed the default profile had increased the speed and set it at 3650mhz. CPU voltage was still at stock (1.1875v).

Intermittently my PC is now restarting and I have no idea what is causing it. The memory I have is GSKILL DDR4 2400Mhz

    Any ideas for troubleshooting?

What does the windows error log say?

I'll check that when I get home

So windows error log has quite a few things in there I noticed the one which will have been a BSOD error I got and that is this:

The other ones will most likely be the issue I'm seeing more often where it will just restart and that appears to show up as:

EDIT: Might just try fix the cause of any other errors in the log so when it happens again I know exactly what one it is.

So Volta to release in Q3 this year? I'd say so, fits in nicely with my theory that they'll drop it straight after Vega releases. Just got to resist the urge to buy an 1180 and wait for the 1180ti this time.

WHEA errors usually indicate you need more CPU voltage on an overclock.
You shouldnt be getting a 3650 all core boost at stock, so if its just done that some maybe auto overclocking setting has been turned on in the BIOS?
Reset the CMOS to default or up your Vcore a few ticks.

  11. Post
Thanks - have underclocked it for the time being as I failed to rest the CMOS on my first attempt.

Will see how that goes. I'm worried it might actually be my power supply.

Man, you had RGB before it became cool.

I know right... I've had to stop wearing my bomber jacket too.

I think I might bite the bullet and just upgrade my PSU and GPU. Thoughts on this card? -

    Ryzen 1700
    2 x 8gb DDR4 2400Mhz
    ASUS B350M-A
    Geforce GTX 1070

Any recommendations for PSU outside of your 1000w one - I want to get it tonight and new? I was looking at

    Recommend Corsair over Coolermaster

Also 10 year warranty vs 3 year

    I bought these.

    RMX is great.
1070 turbo seems fine also. Runs max OC in GPU tweak.

Turns out I didn't make it in time after work so will get it in the morning. This is the current power supply I have - thoughts on whether I need to even upgrade? - http://www.zalman.com/contents/products/view.html?no=89

I'd say your psu is fine. The 1070 only needs about 160 - 185w at load.

    get 3200mhz ram

  23. Post
Agreed^ you need some nice 3200mhz + ram for ryzen to fully shine

  24. Post
Was watching reviews for ram speeds, it had good gains with a 1080, but not great bang for buck for lower GPU's. Worth looking into anyway. Bang for buck 2666 seemed pretty good.

  25. Post
3200mhz ram that will actually run at 3200mhz on Ryzen is not cheap.
