Finally got power back after 10hrs in Albany. First time I’ve had to ditch a fridge full of food as only did the shopping this morning lol

Ours went out around 9 this morning, we got it back around 1:30-2 for about 10 mins then went off again for another 15

I could hear the poor tin on the workshop roof lifting

Insured with AA by chance? We have no excess on such events so when we lost a freezer of food, they just asked us to send a picture of some defrosted food and then asked us to give them a figure of how much we wanted to replace it all

How do you lose a fridge full of food after 9 hours?

If you keep the doors shut most things will last at least 24 hrs, and a lot of stuff doesn't need to be in there in the first place.

Ice cream might go a bit soft, but that's about it.

Ours was a freezer in garage and noticed after several days..... but yes, I thought if door shut on fridge/freezer it would be ok for at least the day

As a general rule, for food that was refrigerated always follow the 2 hour-4 hour rule. In it's simplest form, this rule states:

If the power was out for less than 2 hours, it's okay to refrigerate or consume the food

If the power was out between 2 and 4 hours, the food is okay to consume but don't put it back in the refrigerator

If the power was out for more than 4 hours, discard the food

Some items such as peanut butter, sauces and vegetables will be safe even if the power was out for more than 4 hours. However, it's always better to be safe than sorry and discard if you're not sure.

For frozen foods the rules are different. A freezer that is full to capacity will retain its temperature well enough to preserve food for two days. A half full freezer can accomplish this for about 24 hours.

Freezer yes, fridge not so much - perishable stuff (say milk, meat) should be discarded.

Freezer is fine, fridge nah. Was off nearly 10hrs and we didn’t open it. We’d just done the full weekly shop before that so it was fill including a chicken. When the power did come on we opened it and checked the temp, 12c so nope all the perishable and stuff is getting binned.
