They reckon in a very early presumption that a plumber left a gas torch on. But really, that to me sounds like a waterproofer doing torch on or a welder. I may be one of those, and I may have set another hotel very slightly on fire a while ago, but nah cant take credit for this boo boo.

So is the convention centre fuxx0rd? How many millions in damage? I wonder if they had insurance.

For sure they'd have insurance. But really, if Fletchers chases the sub-contractor responsible, its unlikely their public liability would cover the costs. Sky cant be happy they had to boot out their hotel guests and casino patrons. Plus all surrounding business affected. Council dont do anything anyway, so not like its a problem for their workers going home early.

Fire teams have abandoned efforts to save the roof and are just stopping it spreading now, so yeah, rooted.

Whatever you think about SkyCity, its pretty sad really, when you consider the $$, time, resources, impacted businesses etc. that have gone in to building that, it's a real shame. Would've been a great asset for Auckland and the country.

Wounder if they'll be able to fix it in time for APEC

Spent most of the day wondering why all the office windows were closed when it's so unbearably hot, left the office an hour ago to piss before leaving and got hit with the smell all the way in the staircase of my building at UoA, glad I don't work any closer.

(Christ I'm oblivious when focused on work)

There’s no smoke here in Wellington, if that helps.

a couple of fire engines went past the office here in Gisborne. Can only assume they're on their way to help.

If thats the case, it strikes me as "taxpayer bailout" and "all those shares we've been actively trying to buy back this year are now worth jack"

Carelessness of a subcontractor the cause?
Electrician Lindsay Rowlands, who was working on the floor below when it erupted, said it was understood a blow-torch-type tool was being used on a rubber waterproofing membrane.
