    2013 census
    163k Chinese
    143k Indian
    40k Filipino
    30k Korean
    15k Malay (2006 census)
    13k Japanese
    6K Thai (2006 census)

13k Japanese isn't a huge number but would hardly say "hardly any".

As an AZN (Jap) myself this episode was pretty offensive, not because of this joke but the fact that they grouped Asians as a single ethnicity (the sumo part shows a Chinese style building when it's a Japanese sport).

It's like saying all whites are English.
I think that's the whole point, no?

"Asians all look the same aye"

Apple iPhone X says they look the same, so it must be true.

If all the computing power of an iPhone X can't tell the difference, how can you expect a council worker to do it!

I bet he likes to put some extra filling in her fishcake, if you know what I mean.

I bet he likes to put extra sauce on her fried starfish, if you know what I mean

    .....and I'm done.

Most azns in NZ are Chinese or Korean. If you can't hear them talk you can usually tell them apart by their dress sense, Koreans are more interested in being trendy.
There are almost no Japanese people in NZ and Thais look completely different.
No... There are actually quite a decent number Japanese people around esp AKL
Order by population from largest to smallest: I'd say: Chinese, Philippino, Korean, Indo/Malaysian, Japanese, Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese

Yeah I think the number looks a bit small. I'd say 12k at least!

There are a fair few Japs, you may miss them because they look similar and dress similar to the Chinese, also they don't tend to stick around for very long and often pack it up and head back - presumably NZ life is inferior to Jap life

Apparently it's in the eye of the beholder:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_people

But India is often referred to as the sub-continent, and it's people are quite different from those of China and south east Asia.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Aryan_peoples

I'd say that if you love cricket, you're probably not asian.
