    Toyota Crown Majesta

Anyone know anything about these? looking at getting a comfy cruiser for long distance, or going out on a weekend. Not too fussed about fuel economy. These seem quite cheap for what you get. Budget 10 or under.

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Lis...7cf36fd4a8-004

Anything to look out for? Im guessing ill be needing to have a glovebox mounted headunit or something.

Plans are comfy cruiser, nice stereo, some nice wheels, and the ability to tow my mx5 at worst case scanario. Looks like auckland towbars have a 2ton kit for them.

Or any other options that fit? looked at the v8 fuga, but someone said no good for towing? Falcon is an option, but i kinda like the v8 thing since ive never had one, and in my budget a falcon would be the shitspec 4 speed.

    Why not get a 3.0r?

Well its the obvious option if these are no good. Dont really need awd though, quite like the idea of a v8 since ive never owned one, crown will be a bit more cushy for 95% of what itll be doing. If i was to get a 3.0r id want a facelift wagon with leather which is a bit more expensive than one of these.

have been looking at them as a viable option to replace the gloria (have pinned it down to 2 or 3 options now), i think if i was going down that avenue im going to look at the lexus equivalent instead, more creature comforts and higher chance/ability to make english controls happen

They have the power for towing and a beefy gearbox, but the chassis and the supension isn't up to it. I've looked, doesn't work out The air suspension tends to go after a while which is costly to replace, can replace with non-air struts but the chassis isn't up to the pulling task of towing a car.

what about the chassis is not up to it?

I always thought they were literally built as a taxi.
I know the whole run we watched going through the Toyota factory when we were there in the 90's were being built as taxi's.

i'd be curious to hear this too, most towbar companies ive looked at do their rating system based on a database provided by manufacturers/ govt and if its got a 2t rating thats nothing to sneeze at, its not like theyre drilling holes in the boot panel floor and rivnutting some mounts in place

Roman mentioned something about the fuga having an aluminum chassis so no good for towing, I'm not sure that's a thing or not. But yeah nothing on the crowns.

You shouldn't need to mount headunit in the glovebox. Just recently looked at doing this with a Crown Athlete. With the particular one you posted you might have to chop some plastic out to make it work but nothing too difficult.

Pretty sure the chassis itself isn't aluminium on a Fuga.
Lots of panel and suspension bits are though from what I can see.

Uncle has had one for a while now, does Queenstown to CHCH in it. Seems pretty lush. Suspension has a squeek and the bonnet struts need replacing apparently. Doesn't tickle my fancy, but he loves it. Pretty well suited to long trips in a comfortable manner.

Couple of the aussie guys on the Facebook group reckon there isn't really a suitable place for them, they're not even rated for towing from memory which makes them illegal for it (In Aus anyway..) I'd be interested to know how these guys are doing it, the two main things that ruled a Crown out for me were towing and the headunit ****ery.

Headunit - http://www.world-beatsonic.com/?s=Crown These guys have some plug - n - play stuff that lets you join your headunit to the factory one up the top, no replacement for it unfortunately.

If you do get one, join this group, good resource for knowledge: https://www.facebook.com/groups/770885139654969/

I'm not sure about both of those. Our computer system at work has a towball for them. Much like this http://fukushin-ind.com/toyota_hitch...180_hitch.html
It's only rated to 750kg for licence purposes here in Japan. On Google there are a few other examples too. http://sunrocky.blog-rpg.com/Entry/365/ https://store.shopping.yahoo.co.jp/n...st_shsrg_title

With the stereo, It's not that difficult, you just require a harness for about $10 that bridges the audio. Or just cut into the loom. It's pretty much a normal stereo behind the MD/CD player

It's a confusing naming scheme but the taxi ones are a completely unrelated model (well at least to the modern domestic Crown)

    "with offer $6999"

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/use...040097209.htm?

Even seems to have some sort of old man interior. Really tempting for that kind of money but I'd have to sell the Soarer

And by reading that, their "offer" is a trade in? Im confused. Can I just pay $6999 or not?

Flicked them an email, I tried saying my insurance wouldn't cover me unless I had proof from the manufacturer of ratings, they wouldn't send anything other than "It will have a sticker and a certificate rating it to 2000kg"

I suppose the CGA would cover you if any damage happened as a result of towing cars etc? Or they might say "Lol no official rating go **** yourself"

Those links above to auctions n stuff show very clearly the chassis mounting points, and they look like most tow bar mounting plates and being they're straight in line I'm going to say the idea that there's nowhere nice to affix it is wrong

I dunno I'd go as far as to call it a non issue based on those pictures

    Yeah it's $2000 cash off.

Value Cars in Christchurch has been running the same deal for many years so we're kind of used to it here. For the most part it's a barely legal gimmick but some of the cars at On Sale Cars are genuinely cheap by Christchurch standards.

Yeah, just leaves the whole air suspension thing to deal with, they're at the age they're starting to fail as it is without adding towing. From memory you can get the "basic spec" which doesn't have air suspension, or just rip it out and replace with non-air stuff.

my towing will be as a worst case broken down scenario where i have to move the mx5. Im not going to be using it as a tow car as such so should hopefully be fine.

Now ive decided to take Stalkers view and go the lexus route, although with a gs430. Going ot have a look at some this weekend and make a decision. Couple of grand extra but seems to be a nicer car again.
