There's a town down on the coast of Cambodia called Sihanoukville. Until ~5 years ago it was a (mostly) ok beach town, blighted only by a bunch of gross sexpats and some Russian mafia who mostly kept to themselves.

Then China realised that it was a key sea-port in the Gulf of Thailand. They practically bought the place, turned it into a Special Economic Zone (where gambling - banned in China, and usually banned in Cambodia - is allowed), and then started building casinos en-masse.

Now, 90% of the businesses in the town are Chinese-owned. They won't let Cambodians enter them. Rents have pushed most of the locals out (my mate was renting a place there for $400 a month - his lease wasn't renewed, then it was readvertised and rented to a Chinese family for $5,000 a month). With the casinos has come crime - shitloads of it - and awful building standards. A couple of weeks ago a building collapsed, killing nearly 30 people - labourers and their families who were living on-site. The Chinese owners hadn't even been given a permit to start construction.

The entire town is ****ed, basically, and that's just a single town in a single country. This is happening everywhere, thanks to China's Belt and Road Initiative. In short - they lend money to impoverished countries, and then when they invariably can't pay it back, they claim land instead.

The country of China isn't great. What they're doing to other countries is equally bad, if not worse.

Authoritarian capitalism is on the up. We need to coalesce into something better or get absorbed into a Chinese system.

    yes, we don't like China.

Remember its still really a backward ass 3rd world country pretending to be 1st world. Still has more human rights issues than you can shake a cat at.

We have an identical thread here with close to 500 pages talking about how ****ed the "white" superpower is. It's hardly racist to discuss how ****ed up China is as well, if that's what you were inferring.

There's over a billion Chinese people. Even if there are a million of them wrecking havoc on the world, you're still only talking about the worst 0.1%, a tiny proportion. I've met a bunch of great friends from China who are equally appalled at the things their government are doing.

I second this, we went in 2013 and stayed a week. We went in 2017, intending to go to Koh Rong and stayed 2 days and took the first bus back to Phnom Penh.

Also went in 2017, stayed a few KMs up the beach at Otres, which was a lot more pleasant.

Even Otres is pretty ****ed now. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloen will be next, along with Kampot.

This is a street in Sihanoukville.
